I’m guessing you’ve heard the phrase “Obedience is better than sacrifice.” (1 Samuel 15:22) We know that obedience to God is essential. Let’s be honest, sometimes it can be hard to obey God. What if God is telling us to do something that we consider to be challenging? What if He tells us to do something that makes no sense? Let’s dive into the Word to discover some amazing things that can happen when you obey God.

Amazing Benefits of Obeying God Obey God

1. Protection

Our obedience to God leads to protection. When we do what God tells us to do, we can rest assured knowing that He will protect us. His divine protection covers us as we do what He has instructs us to do.

Daniel

Daniel is a great example of someone who obeyed God at all costs. He excelled in his work, won the king’s favor, and the administrators and high officers envied him. They wanted to condemn and find fault in him so they tried to use the rules of his religion to do so. (Daniel 6)

They convinced King Darius to sign a law that prohibited anyone from praying to anyone other than the king. When Daniel heard about the law he disregarded it and continued to pray to God 3 times a day with his windows open as he always did.

Even though King Darius liked Daniel, he had him arrested and thrown into a den of hungry lions. God honored Daniel’s obedience and He protected him. The lions did not harm him because God didn’t allow them to. Daniel was released and his accusers and their families were then thrown into the den and the lions tore them apart before they even reached the ground.

Daniel answered, “Long live the king! My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have not wronged you, Your Majesty.” Daniel 3:21-22 NLT

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

We can read the account of Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego in Daniel 3:16-28. These three young men were committed to obeying God even unto death.

King Nebuchadnezzar released a decree that required everyone to bow down and worship a golden statue. Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego chose to obey God’s law which instructs us not to serve any other gods.

They were committed to being faithful to God and were willing to accept the punishment of being thrown into a fiery furnace. As a result, God protected them. Even though they were thrown into the extremely hot, firey furnace, they were not harmed in any way!

Then the high officers, officials, governors, and advisers crowded around them and saw that the fire had not touched them. Not a hair on their heads was singed, and their clothing was not scorched. They didn’t even smell of smoke! Daniel 3:27 NLT

2. Blessings

God blesses us when we obey Him. Parents desire to reward their obedient children. Similarly, God desires to bless us when we are obedient. Our obedience to God is what pleases Him.

Peter

Peter was a fisherman whose obedience led to a blessing. Jesus asked Peter to borrow his boat so that He could teach the crowds. Peter agreed and pushed his boat out onto the water for Jesus.

Afterward, Jesus told Peter to go out into the deep and let down his net to catch fish. Peter had been fishing all night and caught nothing, but he chose to obey Jesus anyway.

As a result of his obedience, he caught so many fish that his net began to tear. He needed a second boat to hold all the fish and both boats were on the verge of sinking. Talk about a blessing!

“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! Luke 5:5 NLT

Abraham

Abraham’s blessing is often talked about in the Body of Christ. God instructed him to leave his family, his hometown, and all that was familiar. He was to follow the Lord’s leading to an unknown place. Even though Abraham didn’t know where he was going, he trusted God and acted in obedience. As a result, God blessed him and generations to come after him!

I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:2-3 NLT

3. Miracles

When we obey God we allow Him to move and perform miracles in our lives. If you ever find yourself in need of a miracle be sure that you are walking in obedience to God. This sets the atmosphere for His miracle-working power.

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

Jesus, His mother Mary, and His disciples were attending a wedding celebration. The wine ran out and Mary informed Jesus of the dilemma. She then told the servants to do whatever Jesus instructed them to do.

The servants chose to act in obedience even though it made no sense. Jesus told them to fill 6 large stone jars with water and to dip some out and serve it to the master of ceremonies. To the human mind, this action would result in embarrassment.

However, because the servants were obedient they witnessed a miracle. The water had indeed turned to wine. The master of ceremonies declared that the wine was better than what had been served before!

Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. John 2:7-8 NLT

Jesus Feeds 5,000

Crowds followed Jesus on foot and He had compassion and healed their sick. He didn’t want to send them away hungry, so He told His disciples to feed them. The disciples informed Jesus that they only had 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. So Jesus blessed it, broke it into pieces, and instructed the men to distribute the food.

This may have defied human logic but the disciples obeyed Jesus and distributed the food. Jesus had performed a miracle. There were 5,000 men plus women and children and they ate as much as they wanted. Not only that but there were 12 baskets of leftovers! That is an incredible miracle that happened as a result of their obedience.

They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children! Matthew 14:20-21 NLT

4. Provision

Sometimes, God will tell us to do something that doesn’t make sense to our own logic. When we obey Him and do as He instructs, He provides for us. As long as we are obedient, we can be confident that God will provide for us.

The Virgin Mary

Mary was a virgin engaged to be married to Joseph. She obediently accepted God’s plan to birth the Savior of the world through her. As a result of her obedience, the Lord ensured that her fiancé Joseph remained betrothed to her.

When it was time for Mary to give birth to Jesus provision was made for them. Even though there were no rooms available, Mary and her family were provided for and she was able to give birth in a safe place. They had what they needed to care for Baby Jesus.

She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. Luke 2:7 NLT

The Poor Widow and the Olive Oil

A poor widow was in debt with creditors threatening to take her sons as slaves. She had nothing but a flask of olive oil. Elisha told her to borrow as many jars as possible and to pour her oil into each jar until they were full.

She did as she was told and obeyed Elisha’s instructions. She poured oil into all of the jars leaving each one filled to the brim. When every jar was filled the oil stopped flowing. She was able to sell the olive oil, pay off her debts, and live on what was left over. What an excellent example of the provision that follows obedience.

When she told the man of God what had happened, he said to her, “Now sell the olive oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on what is left over.” 2 Kings 4:7 NLT

5. Positive Change

Our obedience to God can lead to lives being changed! Not only can our obedience change our lives, but it can also change the lives of those around us.

Queen Esther

Queen Esther is someone whose obedience resulted in change for her and her people (The Jews). She allowed God to use her to speak up to the king and defend her people. There was an original decree stating that the Jews would be killed. God used her to change the king’s mind. The Jews were spared and they were blessed as a result of Esther’s obedience.

The Jews were filled with joy and gladness and were honored everywhere. In every province and city, wherever the king’s decree arrived, the Jews rejoiced and had a great celebration and declared a public festival and holiday. And many of the people of the land became Jews themselves, for they feared what the Jews might do to them. Esther 8:16-17 NLT

The Lame Man at the Pool at Bethesda

The lame man at the pool at Bethesda is another person who experienced life change due to obedience. He had been lying there sick for 38 years! He encountered Jesus and explained to Him that he couldn’t be healed because there was no one to put him in the pool. Someone always made it to the pool before him.

Jesus told him to stand up, pick up his mat, and walk. The man chose to obey Him willingly and he was healed instantly. This man’s obedience changed his entire life. He went from being lame and sick for 38 years to being healed and able to walk instantly. His healing story is a testament to God’s ability and healing power!

" Jesus told him, 'Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!' Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath…" John 5:8-9 NLT

  1. I really enjoyed this. I particularly love how you linked Peter’s deeping the fishing nets to catch big fish as blessings of obedience. That is true. I enjoyed reading this undiluted Word of God.

    Every blessing!

  2. Hi. Great post. I often try to put myself in the place of people in the Bible. Sometimes I wonder if I could have the faith and obedience that they show. It is puzzling sometimes, because we know that God rewards our obedience and faith, but it doesn’t always make it easy to make the right choice.

    1. Hi Jodi, thank you! I think that’s so good! At times, I think that it could challenge us to put ourselves in the place of some people in the Bible. Sometimes it’s not easy to make those choices, but it’s so worth it!

  3. Obedience is better than sacrifice for sure. What a great reminder of all the blessings God showers on us when we trust Him to be in charge!
