What is Anxiety?

Before we look at ways to deal with anxiety, we first need to make sure we are able to identify it. Anxiety can be defined as apprehension or fear about what is to come.

Anxiety arises when you worry about the future.

You can experience anxiety on a minor scale where it’s a very brief and fleeting feeling. However, depending on the worry, you can experience it on a major scale and feel chronic anxiety on a daily basis.

Why is Anxiety a Problem?

Anxiety is a problem because it affects the physical body in a negative way. Worry can lead to anxiety, and anxiety can lead to physical illness.

Studies show that anxiety can cause weight gain, blood sugar spikes, insomnia, high blood pressure and more.

In addition to the physical effects, anxiety is also an issue spiritually. If you allow it to, it will take your eyes off of God and keep your eyes on the problem.

Instead of trusting God, you begin to be consumed with fear of future events. This can affect your spiritual health.

How to Deal with Anxiety from a Biblical Perspective

With the daily stresses of life, it is easy to be tempted to worry and allow anxiety to enter into our lives. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus speaks very clearly about how to deal with anxiety.

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

What is Matthew 6 Saying?

Jesus clearly tells us not to worry about our lives. He knew that this would be an area that many people deal with in life and He made sure to give us instructions not to surrender to worry.

Worry does not add anything to our lives, but it does take away. When we are dealing with stress and anxiety, we often lose peace, joy, sleep, and we don’t slow down enough to enjoy the precious moments of the present.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us not to worry about the things of this world. Instead one thing He instructs us to do is seek the Kingdom of God. In verse 33, He says to seek His Kingdom first and everything else will be added unto you.

That is our spiritual solution for anxiety! Seek the Kingdom of God first before anything else. When we seek His kingdom first, everything else will be added unto you.

If you are praying for a job, marriage, money, spiritual growth, etc. seek the Kingdom of God first and then you’ll receive what you’re believing God for.

Keep in mind that we are in a spiritual battle and anxiety is a spirit. Speak to the spirit of anxiety and command it to leave you. Declare the peace of God over your mind, spirit, body and your life.
