Are you looking for ways to grow spiritually? This is such an important topic to me, so I decided to come up with this list just for you!

Here are 5 quick tips that you can implement in your spiritual journey to enhance your spiritual growth. These tips are especially helpful if you are looking to grow closer to God!

5 Ways to Grow Spiritually woman praying and reading Bible

1. Pray Daily

Tip #1 is to pray daily! Oftentimes, we find ourselves very busy! It’s easy and can be tempting to skip prayer time. However, prayer is so important and it doesn’t have to be as complex as some people make it seem.

Prayer is simply you talking to and fellowshipping with God. You can literally pray anywhere! Try praying as you’re getting ready for the day, or as you’re driving in your vehicle.

Pray and talk with God anywhere, anytime, any place. I would recommend that you make sure that you have a designated time where you’re able to get quiet before the Lord.

Try to get in the habit of praying and talking to God throughout your day, daily, to really establish that solid foundation in your relationship with Him.

2. Read Your Bible Daily

The 2nd way you can grow spiritually is to read your Bible everyday. I know many people struggle with this.

It can be easier to pray, but when it comes to reading the Bible it tends to get neglected.

It’s safe to say that quality is way more important than quantity. Let me explain. When you’re reading your Bible, you want to make sure that when you’re reading it, you’re actually getting quality out of it.

This means that you’re reading the bible passage and understanding it. You’re digesting it, meditating on it, and really applying the Word to your life.

For example, you may only read one bible verse, but if you read that bible verse multiple times, meditate on it and even write it down, you’ll get a lot out of it.

If you say that bible verse out loud, think of ways you can apply it to your life, and get a lesson from it, that’s quality! That is what’s most important.

Quality vs. Quantity

It’s not about reading a whole book or even a whole chapter. It’s about focusing on a passage or passages of scripture and taking the time to study it, understand it and apply it. This is what it means to be a doer of the word.

Do this every day. I recommend selecting scriptures that you can apply to your life during the season that you’re in.

If you want to walk in love a little more, study scriptures about love. The internet makes it easy to find scriptures based on a topic. Make note of the scriptures specifically about love and focus on a verse or a passage to meditate on.

This is what I call “quality bible study time” and it ensures that the Word is getting down into your heart. Quality bible study time is better than focusing on the quantity which usually has you reading a bunch of passages that mean nothing to you, and no growth happens.

3. Practice Gratitude

Tip # 3 for how to grow spiritually is to practice gratitude. The Bible instructs us to rejoice in the Lord always! (Philippians 4:4)

Throughout life we all experience bad or negative things at some time or another. It can be really easy to focus on the things that we don’t like and are not going right.

One way that we can grow spiritually is really having an attitude of gratitude. You can do this  each morning when you wake up.

Before you do anything, take the time to thank God for His goodness. You may also choose to write this down in a journal.

Practicing an attitude of gratitude will really help you shift your mindset to focus on the things that are lovely, pure, and good just as the bible instructs us to do. (Philippians 4:8)

4. Guard Your Heart

Guarding your heart is the fourth tip to growing spiritually. This is so important in a time when sin is so easily displayed before us everywhere we turn.

Guarding your heart will help you with your spiritual growth. Guarding your heart requires you to pay attention to what you’re listening to, what you’re reading, and what you’re consuming.

These things affect and impact your spirit and the level of your spiritual strength. If you are constantly inundated with sin and you’re watching sin, reading sin, and hearing sin, it will be very easy for you to sin.

You’re not getting the godliness, holiness and purity that comes from the Word of God. If you’re not feeding your spirit, you can find yourself slipping backwards into old habits. Your spirit will get weaker.

Practical Ways to Guard Your Heart

Pay attention to the music that you’re listening to. If the music that you’re listening to is not glorifying God, then it is getting in your spirit.

Whether you realize it or not, the music will impact you, your behaviors, your thoughts and actions.

The same is true for the things we watch and look at, like, TV or social media. Whatever it is that you’re consuming, if it is not pushing you closer to God, make sure that you are very careful with guarding your heart.

Try listening to worship music throughout the day, or listen to sermons or podcasts. Read books that are going to point you in the direction of following Christ and growing your relationship with God.

If you’re a parent, I highly recommend doing this for your children too! Common Sense Media is a great resource to help you screen and vet shows and movies before allowing your child to watch them.

The Bible instructs us to guard our hearts, so we know that it’s very important and we need to take heed for us and our children.

5. Memorize Scripture

The 5th and final tip for how to grow spiritually is to memorize scripture. Memorizing scripture is really important because when you have it in your heart, you can pull that out at any time.

It’s great to have the Word in your heart, especially at times when you need it the most, and there is no physical Bible nearby.

One way that you can memorize scripture is by taking one specific scripture and writing it down on a note card. Read and recite it daily. Commit it to memory.

I recommend Charlotte Mason’s Scripture Memory System. I’ve personally used this and I think it’s brilliant!

You know that you have the scripture memorized when you are able to quote that scripture without having to look at the card or the bible.

Once you’re able to quote that scripture, review it and speak it out loud periodically (I recommend daily) just to make sure that you don’t forget it.

Memorizing scripture is definitely a great way to make sure that you are enhancing your spiritual growth this year!
