Do you remember how old you were when you started your period? I started my period over 20 years ago. I used disposable pads for 18 of those years.
Imagine all the money, waste, and potential toxins that came with monthly use of disposable pads for 18 years! Yuck! Thankfully, reusable cloth pads have changed the game!
When the world changed in 2020, disposable pads became a little harder to find. Sanitary napkin shortages led me to search and discover reusable cloth pads.
They’ve positively changed the way I view my period, so I hope that what you read below will help you decide if they’re the right choice for you too.
Benefits of Cloth Pads
1. Cloth Pads are Non-Toxic
Reusable cloth pads might be for you if you’re looking for a non-toxic option during your menstrual cycle. Cloth pads are made with non-toxic, safe materials.
This is vastly different from a disposable pad which is full of synthetic materials and chemicals that are harmful to your body. In fact, many women even report having better periods with reduced menstrual cramps simply by switching from disposable pads to cloth pads.
2. You Save Money with Cloth Pads
When I used disposable pads, I purchased a small package every month to make sure I’d always have some on hand. Purchasing a small pack of disposable pads each month can cost about $72 a year. Doing this for 18 years cost me around $1,296 and that does not include all the pantyliners I purchased!
When you use reusable cloth pads, you make an initial investment of about $7-$25 and you don’t have to worry about it anymore. Cloth pads are meant to be washed and used again for years! A general rule of thumb is anticipate cloth pads to last for 5 years and possibly longer.
I was spending about $360+ on disposable pads in a 5 year span. If I buy 2 sets of reusable pads at $25 each, then I’d only spend $50 in a 5 year span! I can save $310 dollars every 5 years just by using to cloth pads!
3. Cloth Pads Keep You Prepared For Your Period
Reusable pads are amazing because they are always readily available when you need them. Women who wear cloth pads can experience peace of mind when their period appears out of nowhere.
Cloth pads eliminate the concern of running out of pads, last minute trips to the store, and being unprepared for periods. You can discreetly keep a reusable pad or two in your purse or office desk to make sure you are always prepared.
4. They Are Comfortable
One of my favorite things about reusable cloth pads is how comfortable they are. They are soft and highly absorbent which helps you feel dry.
I like to describe them as a little pillow for your lady bits. There are many days when I don’t feel them at all and I forget that I’m even on my period.
5. Cloth Pads are Environment Friendly
Cloth pads are great because they produce zero waste! There are no plastics, papers or waste to dispose of! Everything is washable and reusable, so nothing ends up in a landfill.
Depending on your wash routine, cloth pads don’t take massive amounts of water to wash. Low water usage and zero waste make cloth pads perfect if you’re trying to go green.
6. Cloth Pads Are Discreet
Cloth pads don’t look or sound like the traditional disposable pad. Unlike the pastel colors and crinkling sounds of a recognizable disposable pad, cloth pads are pretty and quiet.
They are often made with cute designs in a variety of colors. They don’t make any noise other than the snap of the button that is used to close them.

How to Make Your Period Pleasant
In addition to using reusable cloth pads, there are other products that I use regularly which help me have pleasant periods each month. I use a bidet as part of my daily hygiene routine, so it is a very nice addition to have during my period.

Red Raspberry leaf tea is great to drink during your period. I primarily use two brands: Traditional Medicinals Red Raspberry Leaf Tea and FGO Red Raspberry Leaf Tea.
