I don’t know about you, but the year 2020 opened my eyes to the value of toilet paper in America. Many unprecedented things happened that year, and toilet paper (TP) shortages were among them. TP was all I’d ever used, and it was nowhere to be found! I had to figure out how to solve this problem quickly. My research is what led me to discover the toilet paper alternatives that I’m sharing with you now.

Handheld Toilet Paper Alternatives

Let’s start with handheld toilet paper alternatives. These options have been favorites in my home for the past couple years! They are portable and easy to use once you learn what’s comfortable for you.

Portable Bidet

A portable bidet is a bidet that you can take with you wherever you go! It’s a bottle that you fill with water, and it has a nozzle attachment. You use it to spray a gentle stream of water to clean your behind. This method is very effective in getting you clean! Many people who use it love it, and can’t imagine going back to toilet paper.

Peri Bottle

Most women who have given birth are familiar with a peri bottle. Peri bottles are used during the postpartum period after a woman gives birth. My favorite is the Frida Mom peri bottle because it’s shaped differently than the traditional peri bottle. It was incredible during postpartum, and I love that I can now use it as a bidet.

Reusable Toilet Paper Alternatives

The next TP alternatives to consider are reusable options. These are great because you only have to invest in them once, but you can continue to use them time and time again. These options are great for families looking for something zero waste, eco-friendly, and prefer being self-sufficient.

Family Cloth/Cloth Wipes

A family cloth is a reusable cloth wipe. Unlike the name suggests, the entire family doesn’t share one cloth. It’s simply just a cloth wipe. I use cloth wipes for my toddler. You can use a dry wipe for pee and a damp/wet wipe for poop. While I only use these wipes for my daughter, there are some people that like to use them for the entire family. You will need to keep cloth wipes and a hamper for soiled items near the toilet if you want to try this method.

Bidet

A bidet is quite common in many cultures. It is a fixture that is usually beside the toilet. It is used to spray your nether regions with water after using the restroom. A bidet seat attachment is another option that functions similarly to a stand alone bidet. Both options can be very effective and leave you feeling fresh after an extended  trip to the restroom.

Emergency Survival Toilet Paper Alternatives

The final toilet paper alternatives that I want to share with you are things to keep in mind during an emergency. These are options to consider if you find yourself in survival mode. These options aren’t ideal, but they can get the job done if you are in dire need.

Leaves

Leaves are a common alternative when we think about using the “restroom” in nature. In an emergency situation, leaves are an accessible toilet paper alternative. If you have a choice, opt for a softer leaf. Maple leaves or slippery elms are most recommended.

Corn Husks or Cobs

Some people say that corn cobs and corn husks were used before the invention of toilet paper. Rumor has it that even after toilet paper was created, some early Americans still preferred corn cobs. It is said that corn cobs can really get the job done. If you’re in survival mode and you see corn cobs nearby, go for it.

Final Thoughts on Toilet Paper Alternatives

Regardless of the reason, people are turning their attention toward toilet paper alternatives. If there is another toilet paper shortage one day, there is no need to panic. There are other great options for getting your hinders clean without using toilet paper!
